How to make an ANBU Vest
Hey everyone! well a friend of mine asked me how to make an ANBU Vest so I decided to make a tutorial for everyone.
Materials
- Reference images http://scans.janchan.com is a great source of reference material from the art book
- white or grey broadcloth (I'm a size medium and 2 metres worked fine for me)
- Quilt batting (1.5 - 2 metres, depending on above)
- 2 white/grey plastic buckles (like the kind on school bags)
Tools
Procedure
Step 1 First start with measurements, a friend would be very helpful here. Look at the shirt you're wearing (if you're not wearing one, now would be a good time to put one on), and make sure it’s not baggy.Measure from one side seam to the next, and add about 3 inches to it - or more depending on how fitted you want it. This is measurement A.
Measure from your waist up to the under of your arm. This is measurement B.
Measure across your chest. This is measurement C.
Step 2 Using these measurements draw the pattern onto a piece of newspaper and add about an inch all around for seam allowance. Cut it out, play with placement and measurements, then transfer to your fabric and cut out 4 pieces.
Step 3 Take 2 of the pieces and sew together the tops and sides but leave the bottom open. Repeat for the other 2 as well. Turn both pieces right-side out.
Step 4 Cut two pieces of batting to the same shape as your front and back pieces, only slightly smaller to fit. Put it in and stitch up the bottom seam.Stitch the front and back pieces together along the side seams. DO NOT SEW THE ARM HOLES OR TOP TOGETHER!!!
Step 5 Cut 4 pieces of broadcloth that are 3 inches (2" +1" seam allowance) as long as measurement A. Take two of the pieces and sew the two long edges together, then turn them right-side out. Cut another 2 pieces of batting slightly smaller and pass them through. Sew the short edges together so that you have a 'ring.'
Step 6 Sew the 'ring' onto the bottom of your vest making sure to have the right sides be on the right sides when finished and that your seams line up. Pinning it into place helps a lot.Use your sewing machine to sew in the decorative lines of the vest. Both sides are identical. Make sure that you don't sew both layers together!
Step 7 To make the straps, put on your vest and get a friend to measure over your shoulder, from the back corner to the front corner and add about 2 inches. Cut 4 pieces (the measurement you just took by 1" + seam allowance). Sew 2 of the pieces together, with the batting inside, ect and attach the buckles to one end. Repeat for the 2nd strap.Step 8 To the front of the vest attach the other half of the buckle. Then create a neat square (by 'neat' I mean so that the edges are finished and look nice). Stitch the bottom and sides to the front piece of the vest over the top of the buckle, forming a sort of pocket. This not only hides the buckle but creates that square on the front of the vest to match the back.
Step 9 Test it out. Your straps should now be workable.
Step 10 All that’s left to do now is the little squares on the sides of the vest. I'm not sure what they are or what they are there for and some people choose not to put them on at all, but this is how I made them.
Take a piece of broadcloth about 1" by 3" (give or take depending on how long you want it to be) Sew it together so that you get a loop - kind of like when you loop a piece of tape onto itself. Then sew it onto the vest either with the machine or by hand.
Look at the reference images for placement
Congratulations, you are done! hopefully it wasn’t too hard to follow.
