Paper mache
From CosplayWiki
Papier mâché is a substance that is used to hold paper together. There are several recipies that people use while cosplaying to create paper mâché. Newspaper works great for paper mache and is easy to get. Rip the paper - don't cut it. When you rip the paper it gives nice jagged edges that help with overlapping. Pieces of paper are dipped in the glue substance than applied to a shape or pressed into a mold. Several layers are required to make the prop more durable. Let each layer dry before adding an additional layer to prevent the inside layers from not drying all the way and potentially molding. Props should be spray painted with a layer of clear paint to seal them.
Recipies
Flour / Water
This is one of the simple ones I usually use a 1:1 ratio. 1 cup of flour to 1 cup of water. Adding a bit of salt will help it last longer and reduce molding. Has the potential to mold due to being food products.
Wallpaper Paste
Follow the directions on the container.
General Purpose White Glue / Water
Use 1:1 for the glue and water. 1 bottle of glue and 1 bottle of water
Tips
- For the last layer of paper mache use white paper as it will make the painting easier.
- You can cover whatever you are working on with the plastic saran-wrap and the paper mache will not stick to it.
