Tools
Procedure
Step one
Open up the Bubbletape container and take the gum out. Remove the lables from it too. This will end up being your "backbone" for the pocketwatch.
Step two
Open up the sculpey and start smooshing it around and getting it soft.
Step three
Begin flattening out the Sculpey. A thickness of about 1/3 of an inch is usually good. I use a rolling pin to flatten mine out.
Step four
Place the flattened Sculpey over top of the Bubbletape container! Make sure you smoothe it over top of it and completely cover the Bubbletape container. Get it as thin as you can and as close to the Bubbletape container as you can (no air pockets!) but don't leave any cracks in the Sculpey! On what's to be the back of your pocketwatch sculpt a small loophole for the chain to go through.
Step five
Once you have the Bubbletape container completely covered it's time to work on the small details! Sculpt out the top knobs and the top and bottom part of the watch. (the large tube-looking part and the small dials at the top of the watch)
Step six
Attach the compact mirror in the center of the watch. Smoosh it on there really hard! Take Sculpey and put it around the edges to secure the mirror to the watch.
Step seven
Okay, this is for the pocketwatch's clamps and you can do this one of two ways: 1. Sculpt the clamps out of Sculpey 2. Use the gold wire. Form the clamps into the basic shape. (I'm assuming you're all using referance images here!) If you use the wire you may want to cover the ends of the wires with Sculpey so they don't poke you.
Step eight
Okay, now here's where it can get a little tricky....put your oven on around 300 degrees and bake the watch in five minute intervals for around 15-20 minutes. Let the watch cool completely after each five minute interval. IF YOU BAKE IT ALL AT ONCE YOUR MIRROR WILL CRACK.
Step nine
Let the pocketwatch cool completely before painting the details with the paint. (the clamps, the knobs, edges around the mirror etc)
Step ten
Thread the chain through the loop and you're done!
